Cruach Adrain

Catherine, Greg and I went up Cruach Adrain on Sun.

The weather did give some nice colouring on the hills with blue sky trying to break thru. But eventually the cloud came in at the top with not too great visibility on way down.

The summit cone is steeper than I remember and due to the bad visibility we headed straight up a steep slope which saw us virtually climbing. My crampon came loose and had to cut a stance to put it back on. This was supposed to be a walk!

After the summit I wasn't looking firward to going back the same way. Luckily, after a couple of scouts around we decided to go slightly more to the left of where we came up and it wasn't as bad. Still, wouldn't have liked to slip.

On the way down we didn't bother taking a reading as you can't really go wrong. Not so, just as the cloud cleared we saw we were just about to head down the east side of the ridge. A quick correction with the map and compass by Catherine and we back tracked a little to drop down into the right corrie.

I had my new GPS but found the bearings a little strange. Would have helped if I had taken it off US mode and into UK mode!

I am not used to longish day walks and my ribs ached by the time got back to the car. Think I still need physio. Anyone know of a good one?
